How to Make the Most of Your Naps
As a student you may think, "I'm in the prime of my life. Why would I ever want to take a nap?" But after a few unmissable nights out and early classes, you understand how a good nap makes all the difference.Ed. note: We're not sleep experts, but the guys at HackCollege offer up their best tips for squeezing in some extra shut-eye at school from first-hand experience.
But how can you maximize your little snoozes without missing out on the next big thing? There are a few tips to keep in mind before your head hits the pillow or arm of the sofa. This post will help you coordinate and maximize those brief yet divine periods of sleep.
Why are you tired in the first place?
Many other things can potentially make you tired, namely: dehydration. If you're routinely feeling tired, try pounding a glass or two of water from time to time. Remember that you may be drinking plenty of water/juice but dehydrating yourself with other things (probably soda or coffee).
If you can, make a point to diagnose the problem rather than simply treating the symptoms.
Understand REM
While it's not the end of the world as you know it, if you don't mind your REM cycles, this little tip can keep you from feeling sluggish. For most people, it takes them about 30 minutes of shut-eye before their body enters REM, or rapid eye movement. Believe it or not, you want to prevent this from happening. Waking up once REM has started will leave you feeling groggy.
So limit your naps to 20-30 minutes apiece. It might be tough to keep them this short, but you'll save yourself from somehow winding up having taken a 4-hour "nap."
Consider the Slingshot
If you really need a boost, you can always attempt the caffeine slingshot, a favorite among the HackCollege writers. It works as such:Photo by Ballistik Coffee Boy.
- Drink a small cup of coffee quickly
- Squeeze in a 15-20 minute nap
Because the caffeine will take a few minutes to make it to your brain and the warmth of the coffee will leave you just drowsy enough, this is a double-whammy. You'll have a nice, short nap and wake up with more energy than Pee-wee Herman. Your homework still won't be done, but you'll have renewed energy to get to work.
If my suggestions still leave you feeling sleep-deprived, wikiHow has a pretty solid article on power napping, or check out Lifehacker's top 10 ways to sleep smarter and better.
The school-bound productivity nuts at weblog HackCollege will be joining us all week to offer their perspective on making the most of your Back to School regimen.

do contest.
cola.

VERSÃO ORIGINAL EM INGLÊS
At the February 1988 meeting, YCCC member, Thomas Scott Johnson, KA1QXI
(now NW1I, who now lives in Concord, MA), a physician at Brigham & Women's
Hospital specializing in sleep problems, spoke on sleep deprivation strategies - or
how to sleep four hours out of 48. This is the first program we can remember where
the majority of those present took notes! He began by telling us that most people
come to the Hospital's Sleep Clinic complaining that they have trouble sleeping, and
it is interesting to speak before a group that wants to learn how to avoid or minimize
sleep. After a brief overview of the physiology of sleep (90 minute cycling, REM
sleep, and so forth), he gave his recommended schedule.
On Friday afternoon, have a reasonably good meal (but no alcohol) and take a three-
hour nap, preferably from 4:30 to 7:30 PM EDT (for CQ WW Phone, which starts at 8
pm EDT), or 3:30 to 6:30, if the contest starts at 7 pm EST. When you get up, have
some coffee. Eat no large meals during the contest, just snacks with high
carbohydrates, low fat, and reasonable protein. Two hours before your normal
waking time, take a 90-minute nap (this allows a full sleep cycle so that you will wake
up refreshed), or sleep for 180 minutes. Then have another cup of coffee.
Only drink coffee when you awaken from your naps; otherwise you will have
trouble falling asleep and will not awaken rested when you do sleep. The first
afternoon of the contest, Saturday afternoon, schedule a 30-minute nap for
sometime between 3 and 4 PM. Take another 90 or 180 minute nap the second
morning. Optionally, take another nap the second afternoon, Sunday afternoon.
[Ed. note: However, since you don't care what happens after the contest ends
only a few hours later, you may load up on caffeine Sunday afternoon to avoid
that Sunday afternoon nap.]
Avoid alcohol during the contest. Avoid heavy physical activity (such as tower
or tree climbing) right before the contest since it promotes deep sleep. Keep
the shack very brightly lit to keep you alert. When you do nap, do so in a
darkened room.
Keep the shack warm, 72 to 74 degrees, since low body temperature encourages
sleep.
